Five For Friday

Okay, okay...I know we haven't had a post in awhile...a really long time...but what better way to solve that problem then with a Five for Friday!!!!

Now, we have officially started school again...insert sad face. SO, that means I have been super tired, even though I've only officially been back for 2 days...I get tired REALLY easily. Some people say it's called "aging"....I say it's called "two small children." So here is a mix of school and personal to ease us all back into the school mode!

It's the end of August which is one of my favorite months because that is when we have our local state fair!! I LOVE the fair! I have gone every year since as long as I can remember. Want to know my favorite reason for the fair???????

It's the PURPLE COW people!!!! This is the most delicious drink! It is like a root beer float BUT it's with blackberry ice cream, blackberry syrup and 7up. It's DELICIOUS!!!!

Here's another gem from our fair trip.

This is the petting zoo. It's a pen that has all these animals wandering around. Goats, pigs,'s pretty cool...until this goat knocks you over...not fun! Good thing I rebounded gracefully...I hope. Here we are with a goat, which Tyson was not a big fan of. In fact, he wasn't a big fan of the whole place. Maybe he will enjoy it next year. Em LOVED it! This is surprising because she's over dramatic and scares easily with extra dramatic flair! I don't know where it comes from. I blame my husband. Nope. Not from me. Stop thinking that!

I am ALWAYS looking for new readalouds. I LOVE Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Charlotte's Web. Those are two that I read EVERY year. I love, love, love Charlotte's Web because every year I cry, which I don't love, BUT my kiddos are always amazed by how the book affects me, which in turn shows them the power of a good book. At least that's what I tell myself. I know I'm right about it. Right? Anyway, this year our librarian found this new book and he said it was SO GREAT which is why I'm sharing it with you. I haven't had a chance to read it yet but it's by Kevin Henkes so how can it NOT be good?

If you have read this book I would love to hear your feedback. Like I said, I'm always looking for new readalouds and our librarian assures me that this is a great one. Check it out!

Question: Do you use differentiated literacy centers with your students? I'm late to this super awesome idea!! Now, I am not a huge fan of literacy centers that can only be used once. I hate spending time cutting all this stuff out, making sure to cut it SO nicely and label it just in case the pieces get messed up, for a one time use. YUCK! Then I hear the dreaded "Mrs. Sanchez we've already done this," or they get done so fast that I hear the even worse "I'm done!" No thank you! We have an hour block in our schedule dedicated to reading groups, intervention groups and independent work. N.O.T. F.U.N. It's great for the kids that are in group, I mean talk about growth! It can be horrible for the independent workers. Now, up until recently I broke this time up. They spent 25 minutes reading to self and working on a response, then they worked on spelling, then they moved on to partner reading or listen to reading. This works great. But I wanted more. More challenge. More differentiation. More interaction with the text. Insert: Margo Southall. Hello awesome!!! This is what I have been looking for!

I mean, let me tell you. Awesomeness wrapped up in a book! Maybe I'm behind the times, but this is just so great. Minimal prep, working with texts at their level, choice, engagement...just awesome. That's all I have to say about that.

Finally, I am mostly done with my room. I have been so inspired by all these great posts and all these cute rooms. Mine seems a little bare but that will change when the kiddos come and the posters and projects go up. Here's a look.

You know when you think "YES! That's such a great picture!" Guess what? This one isn't. Talk about blurry! But, it's the best one I have. The sign across the top says "masterpieces" and I put it there because this board is big. I am 6 feet tall and I have to stand on top of this bookshelf to put stuff on it and I don't want to do that. Sounds like a great way to fall and crack my head open. I'll pass. Hence, the generic sign that I can leave up forever and ever and just change the art. Genius, huh? I know that's what you were thinking:)

Now this isn't a picture of my classroom BUT I am proud of it. Technically it's FOR the class so it should fit under this category right?

This is my parent handbook!!! I am pretty sure when I was making it the copy machine said to me "Lindsey I am going to jam every paper you put in here." It took FOREVER to copy. I mean forever...for three pages...ridiculous. This is why I am so proud of it. I am not a huge technology person but I figured out how to format this book. I am really proud of the fact that when you lift each flap you have english AND spanish! HA!! I am pretty proud that I figured out how to format that part correctly. Now, you may notice that I had to write the b, e and h on behavior. I don't want to talk about it. It was the copy machine. I told you it was out to get me. No way is that user error.

Finally, this week was national dog day. Did you miss it? The only way I knew about it was from my mom. Let's just say she's a little dog obsessed so she's on top of all this stuff. She already shared with you her three ginormous beasts of dogs, so now it's my turn.

Meet Daxter and Gracie.

This is Daxter.

This is Gracie.

They are both rescues. Gracie DOES NOT like the camera. If you take a camera out and put it on the table, she will run away. If you hold your phone up like you are taking picture, she will run away. The fact that I got these pictures of her is a miracle. The power of a Scooby snack. Daxter is a pit bull/boxer mix and Gracie is a Shepard/retriever mix. Daxter is the baby of the family. He is very emotional. Like, weirdly human style emotional. He puts himself in time out. He pouts. He has to sleep under the blankets. Gracie on the other hand is the sneaky one who causes the trouble. BUT, I love them and they are my furry babies.

I am off to enjoy my last three day weekend before I go back to work. I hope you all have a great weekend!!

Five For Friday

Hey everyone! We are linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching again this week for a little Five for Friday. So here is a little peek at my week.

My week started off wonderful! My little boy turned one! Time sure does fly and even though I am sad that he is growing up, I am excited for him to become more mobile and independent. He isn't a full fledged walker yet but he is soooo close!

We just had a small, family only party but it was a good one. Check out that cake! I made that all by myself thanks to Pinterest!

My nightmares started this week. After the first night, where I had a dream that I got stuck at Starbucks and I couldn't get to school on time for Back to School night, I thought maybe this is just a fluke? Maybe they aren't really starting???? W.R.O.N.G. I have had one every night this week! This gave me a kick in the pants to start working on stuff. I have been changing the colors of my room which is requiring me to make some new decor pieces that I have been avoiding so, that's the first thing I started with.

This is what I have done so far. A new welcome sign for the door, pieces for a new job chart as well as a class helpers sign, new learning target posters and finally a parent flip book, another idea from Pinterest! Now I need to laminate all the pieces and copy the flip book on some bright paper. I am feeling better that I have gotten some stuff done. Maybe this will make the nightmares go away??????? Am I that lucky????

To go along with number 2, my mom and I took our annual trip to Lakeshore and Ikea this week. It amazes me that we go every year, and every year I still find so much to buy! At Lakeshore, I just stocked up on smelly stickers, my kids LOVE them, and other staples. I did find these two things:

How cute are these letters?!?!?! For the past few years I have had my kiddos make their name tags and I put a little paper on them that they use to track their behavior score each day. This year I made a new behavior clip chart to use, so I found these SUPER cute name tags! I'm pretty excited about them!

At Ikea I found these super cute frames that I am going to spray paint to match my room and put behind my desk on a bookshelf. They were $3.00! Can't beat that!

Here are the rest of my finds. Now that I'm not in a portable, the kids shouldn't be bringing in as much sand which is why I chose this new rug. The stools are for my computers and who can resist those frames??? The green storage tubs are my favorite. I already have a bunch in blue so I am excited that they have green now!

Right after school got out this year our district had some presenters come and present to us. I learned A LOT of cool things but my FAVORITE new piece of! Have you checked this place out?!?!?!?!? ADDICTING! They are all used books and they are at cheap prices! A lot of the books ship for free. I have probably ordered 25 different books so far and I haven't had a bad one yet.

These are the only two I have left at home. The rest I have already taken to school but look at how awesome they are! Anytime I can get cheap books I get pretty excited!!!

Finally, this week was the big sale!! We want to thank everyone who helped us have a great sale and for all the support. We truly hope that our resources are helpful to all those that purchased them. We are currently working on adding A and B passages to our Fall Passages bundle. So if that is one you purchased stay tuned this week for a new revised version to download. As a big thank you we uploaded 2 freebies to our Facebook. We hope that you enjoy them and can find a way to use them with your students at the beginning of the year. Click HERE or on the picture to check them out.

We hope that everyone has a great week!!

Show us what you bought!!

We are linking up with Blog Hoppin' for a little linky party to give you a glimpse into what we bought at this awesome sale.

My name is Lindsey and I am a font ADDICT! I LOVE them! I can't get enough! So the first thing I had to buy were some awesome fonts! I picked these gems up from Cara Carroll and Graphics from the Pond. I love them already!!!

Now, I am S.L.O.W.L.Y getting back into school mode so I had to pick up a few things. Last year I got Amy Lemons Learning Addition Strategies Unit. Well, she now has a Learning Subtraction Strategies Unit, which I picked up right when she put it out there because it was on sale. So this time around I got her new Addition and Subtraction Math Stations pack. This is going to be so great for the beginning of the year!! They are such a great way for the students to review their basic facts and strategies!
While I was in her store I also picked up her new spelling pack. I was not happy with how spelling went with my students last year. I am hoping that with this great pack my students will dominate their spelling this year!

Lastly, I decided to get a head start on some nonfiction unit planning, which we start in October. I got these great Spider units AND an awesome Bats unit! Click on the picture to be taken right to these awesome products!

I hope that you all are finding some fantastic things to buy during the sale! Don't forget to pop by our store and check it out. We've got some great back to school products including our leveled Fall passages and our Back To School conversation club! I am hoping I can make it through the rest of the sale without spending anymore money...probably not though;)

Five for Friday!

Hey There!  We're linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching to do Five For Friday!  So here's what we've been up to this week!

This week, I returned from visiting my son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in Texas!  Whew, was it hot!   Here is Grammy Kristin and Great Grammy with their grandson-cutie-pie!

I met this guy while I was there.  Poor thing....those horns give me a headache just looking at 'em and he has to carry those around all day.

And this week we both discovered this deliciousness!  Yippee!  If you are a coconut nut like we are, you're going to L.O.V.E. this stuff!  It takes JUST LIKE coconut cream pie with only 80 calories!  Yep, that's what I said....80 calories!!!!   I'll be eating this every single day from now on!  Yumm-O!

These are my huge, hairy monster dogs!  A brother and sister newfie who just turned one, and their big   older sister, a golden retriever!   Aren't they so pretty?  It was bath week this week!  They stayed clean for all of about five minutes!  But being water dogs...that's no problem!  They love any excuse to get wet!

And finally this week, we finished and posted our  Friendship Conversation Club!  This is a pretty cool and VERY easy way to hit those speaking and listening standards. It's also great preparation for those big test they have to take, which in our state is the SBAC.

Click on the picture to check it out or click HERE.

Head over to Doodle Bugs Teaching to check out the rest of the blogs:)
